International Trademarks
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland and is responsible for administering and registering international trademarks. They are also responsible for helping member countries create international laws regulating trademarks. Their website is located here: http://www.wipo.int/portal/index.html.en
This global organization currently has over 184 member countries. The Madrid Trademark system is used in establishing trademarks. This system allows the trademark owner to register their trademark for protection in several countries with one simple application. WIPO is currently trying to link the 300 individual intellectual property offices through a central networked database called WIPOnet.
The International Application simulator on the WIPO website offers a walkthrough process to see if individuals are eligible to file an International trademark application. Application fees start out at 653 EU and will depend much on the trademark being filed.
The WIPO website discusses their fees in more detail. All applications to the WIPO must be sent through the applicant’s intellectual property office located in their nation.
The application will then be sent directly to the International Bureau by their nation's intellectual property representative. Applications will be returned to senders failing to follow this procedure.
